Anthropic has launched a research preview of the Model Hardware Standard, a specification designed to enable AI agents to operate different physical devices through a common interface. Initial testing involves scientific laboratories and advanced manufacturing.

MHS stems from a collaboration with HHMI Janelia Research Campus and aims to connect instruments that currently require separate integrations: microscopes, liquid handlers, robotic arms, and laboratory equipment.

From software to the physical world

Agents have already learned to use browsers, terminals, and applications. The next step is controlling physical instruments. Here, the challenge becomes more complex, as an error does not merely produce an incorrect file: it can damage an experiment, a piece of machinery, or a sample.

A common specification lowers integration costs. Anthropic claims that tasks currently requiring weeks or months could be reduced to hours or minutes.

The autonomous laboratory

An agent connected to multiple instruments could plan experiments, adjust parameters based on results, and recover from certain hardware errors without human intervention. This paves the way for laboratories operating twenty-four hours a day, accelerating highly repetitive research cycles.

The same logic applies to manufacturing: inspection, calibration, and quality control can become processes coordinated by agents that reason about the status of the entire line.

Safety becomes physical

Greater autonomy, however, entails greater responsibility. Permissions, constraints, emergency controls, and verifiable logs are required. An AI operating a robot cannot be treated like a chatbot generating an erroneous response.

MHS is compelling precisely because it attempts to turn this new risk category into a standards issue, rather than an endless series of proprietary integrations.
