Apple has introduced AirPods 5 with an interesting strategic move: bringing features typically considered premium to the lineup's most accessible model. The new generation starts at $129 in the United States and includes active noise cancellation that, according to company tests, cuts up to 50% more noise than AirPods 4 with ANC.
Yet the most significant aspect isn't necessarily the audio. When paired with an iPhone compatible with Apple Intelligence, AirPods 5 serve as an access point to Siri AI, which Apple is rolling out in beta with iOS 27. The assistant can leverage personal context from messages, emails, and other on-device information, while Live Translation aims to turn translation into an ambient feature rather than something you need to open on a screen.
The earbud as an invisible interface
Smartphones placed touch at the center of digital life. Earbuds can do something different: remove the screen from the path between question and answer. Asking for information, pulling up an appointment, or translating a conversation while walking means shifting AI into a much more natural, continuous context.
Apple has also redesigned the acoustic architecture, improved Adaptive EQ, and made Transparency mode more natural. The version with a wireless charging case costs $149, adding stem-based volume control and longer battery life.
The battle for AI runs through what we wear
Meta is betting on glasses, Apple on earbuds and the Watch, while other manufacturers experiment with new wearables. The shared question is which device will become the most natural way to interact with a personal agent. AirPods have a massive advantage: millions of people already wear them without having to change their habits.
