Anthropic has announced a $5 million program to fund independent research into the impact of artificial intelligence on user wellbeing. The issue has become urgent as chatbots are no longer used merely to write emails or code: more and more people treat them as personal conversational partners, tutors, advisors, and even sources of emotional support.

The program provides grant funding, access to models, and technical support to build open-source evaluations. The goal is to allow external researchers to study behaviors that the industry does not yet know how to properly measure.

The issue is not just traditional safety

Model evaluations have long focused on capabilities, hallucinations, cybersecurity, and dangerous content. However, prolonged conversation with an assistant can produce more subtle effects: dependence, isolation, overreliance, or the reinforcement of false beliefs.

These risks are difficult to measure because they depend on time and personal context. An isolated, harmless response can become problematic when repeated over weeks.

Independent research is needed

Relying exclusively on companies to evaluate their own impact creates an obvious conflict. Anthropic says that grant recipients will work independently and publish open tools that other developers can also reuse.

This is an important step because the quality of a model can no longer be judged solely by how smart it is. We will also need to understand what kind of relationship it builds with people.
