Apple has opened pre-orders for Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, with in-store availability starting September 18. The core of the update is not a radical form-factor redesign, but an overhaul of the components that collect and interpret physiological data. Cupertino calls it the Health Sensing System and pairs it with the S11 chip: the promise is to make heart rate, its variability, and recovery more prominent elements in everyday watch use.
It is a direction consistent with the recent evolution of wearables. Step counting and workout tracking remain central features, but Apple wants to move the Watch toward a more continuous reading of the user's condition. The new models therefore do not merely display heart rate: they sample more frequently, compare readings against the personal profile, and use them to deliver concise insights into available energy throughout the day.
A redesigned sensor to increase measurement frequency and quality
The new system targets the optical sensor and the contact points with the wrist. Apple has redesigned the photodiodes, arranging them in a ring structure intended to capture light more efficiently; it has also expanded the surface area of the electrodes to improve skin contact. The green LEDs used for optical readings are larger as well and, according to the company, more energy-efficient.
This results in a heart rate reading every five seconds. Apple claims that Series 12 and Ultra 4 offer the most accurate heart rate tracking available on a wearable, linking the claim to a study conducted on more than a thousand participants with diverse profiles. It is a manufacturer claim, and should thus be viewed within the scope of the methodologies and comparisons chosen by Apple, but it clarifies where this generation's technical investment is focused.
The most significant step involves HRV, or heart rate variability. It is not a metric that simply describes how many beats occur in a minute: it measures the variation in time between successive heartbeats and is commonly used to observe the body's response to rest, stress, and physical activity. Apple states that the new Watches can collect these measurements up to 24 times more frequently than previous models.
Greater data density does not automatically equate to medical advice. HRV and heart rate can fluctuate for vastly different reasons, ranging from sleep and workouts to momentary factors. The practical value depends on the software's ability to establish an individual baseline over time, preventing a single fluctuation from being interpreted as a definitive assessment of health status.
Readiness attempts to translate complex numbers into everyday guidance
Debuting on Series 12 and Ultra 4 is Readiness, a score from 0 to 10 that combines recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep assessment. The goal is to provide an estimate of one's capacity to take on the day, also updated based on what the user does in the hours after waking. It is an approach already familiar to users of sports platforms and fitness-oriented smartwatches, but Apple is integrating it into the standard experience of its ecosystem.
Information gathered overnight will continue to play an important role. The overnight vitals section now includes an analysis of recovery HRV relative to one's baseline. Added to this is a daytime view, designed to transition from data logged during sleep to metrics observed during active hours, catching fluctuations that might not emerge from the overnight summary alone.
A dedicated watch face complication also allows real-time heart rate viewing. This is a seemingly minor tweak, but a significant one for the product's positioning: Apple Watch is increasingly framed less as a wrist display for notifications and more as a device that supports tracking, movement, and recovery without requiring users to open their iPhone.
Later this year, Apple will also update the Health app on iPhone with Health Age, a metric accessible to owners of the two new models. The app will also introduce mobility assessments powered by iPhone computer vision models and heart data from Apple Watch: flexibility, strength, and balance are among the aspects cited by the company. In the United States, users will be able to book and purchase lab tests covering more than 50 biomarkers directly from the app at approximately 2,000 Quest Diagnostics locations, for a stated price of $119. This service is limited to the US market and not a feature that automatically transfers to other countries.
Apple Intelligence and design: updates beyond the sensors
Both watches run watchOS 27 and also gain new integrations powered by Apple Intelligence. Features mentioned by Apple include the use of Shazam music recognition and Live Rewind, which brings a text transcript of the last 15 seconds of a conversation to the screen. As with other Apple Intelligence features, language availability, geographic rollout, and system requirements will be details to verify at launch across different markets.
Series 12 is offered in aluminium and titanium versions, alongside new ceramic options in midnight blue and pearl white. Apple states that the aluminium used is 60% stronger than that of the previous generation. Ultra 4, meanwhile, retains its more outdoor-oriented identity and arrives in natural titanium and black titanium finishes.
Alongside the watches, the band lineup has also been updated. For Series 12, new colorways join the Sport Band, Sport Loop, Solo Loop, and Braided Solo Loop lines, while Modern Buckle adopts a fabric with subtle color accents and is also offered with gold hardware. There are updates for the metal models as well: Milanese Loop and Link Bracelet gain color-matched variants for the titanium cases.
For Ultra 4, Apple is refreshing Trail Loop and Alpine Loop and updating Ocean Band, now made from translucent silicone. Dedicated Hermès options also remain available, including styles for Ultra 4 in knit, rubber, and titanium. The breadth of the lineup confirms that bands remain a major commercial and stylistic element, but it does not change the essence of the launch: this time, the generational difference is primarily happening beneath the sensor glass.
Series 12 and Ultra 4 thus arrive at a stage where Apple is working to unify data collection, software interpretation, and services within the Health app. The key aspect to watch after the release will be the quality of real-world insights: sampling frequency can improve the overall picture, but accuracy, reliability across different use cases, and the clarity of explanations provided to users will determine the new system's true utility.
