Apple enters the foldable smartphone segment with iPhone Duo, a device that does not attempt to rewrite the rules of hardware from scratch. However, its presence shifts the weight of the category, as the Cupertino-based company brings to an already established market an element rivals have often lacked: software polish designed to make using two form factors in the same product feel natural.
The Duo is expected next month and arrives after years in which Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, Google, and Honor have experimented with dimensions, hinges, and flexible panels. Apple is therefore not facing unexplored territory. The wide, compact form factor, close in proportions to a passport when the phone is closed, has already seen interpretations in the Android world; several technical milestones accompanying the launch also have equivalents, or precedents, among competitors.
This point is significant precisely for that reason. A new entrant is not judged solely by its spec sheet: in Apple's case, the ability to coordinate interface, apps, and the transition between the outer screen and inner panel can determine whether foldables will remain an expensive niche or take on a more practical role in the daily lives of iPhone users.
A mature design in a market that has already experimented heavily
The Duo's design does not arrive with the surprise factor it would have had a few years ago. Android foldables have already shown that a relatively short and wide chassis can offer a usable external display without turning into an excessively bulky device once opened. Moreover, Samsung has invested heavily in promoting the new proportions of its models, helping make familiar an approach that Apple is adopting only now.
The same applies to the display crease, perhaps the visual and tactile flaw that most affected the perception of early foldables. Apple credits the Duo's result to a hinge made of one hundred components, adhesives designed to let the panel's layers slide against each other, and a matte finish that reduces reflections and glare. In hands-on impressions reported during the launch event, the central seam is hardly visible, though it remains noticeable to the touch if you search for it.
It is an important improvement, but not an exclusive one. Samsung has already significantly reduced the crease on the Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra, thanks in part to new titanium layers for the display. Oppo, on the Find N6, has instead addressed the tiny gaps around the hinge area using 3D printing. Without a direct comparison between the devices, it is difficult to determine which solution is more effective, and in any case, the gap between the top models now appears subtle rather than revolutionary.
Apple is also joining an already active race on the environmental protection front. The iPhone Duo features IP68 certification, a threshold Google had already reached in foldables and that Honor has surpassed with IP69. Dust and water resistance remains an essential requirement for a device with moving parts, but on its own, it is not enough to define a competitive edge.
The real test will be how iOS inhabits the dual screen
Apple’s bet is therefore less flashy and, on paper, harder to match with a spec sheet: the quality with which software utilizes the two surfaces. A foldable forces every operating system to solve problems that simply do not exist on a traditional phone. An app must know where the user is when the device is opened or folded shut; content must not jump, scale poorly, or lose context; the interface must adapt to the extra screen real estate without merely stretching the same elements.
On Android, these capabilities have existed for some time, but the experience varies depending on the manufacturer, the model, and above all, the app being used. Developers have had to contend with numerous screen shapes, differing multitasking implementations, and customized software builds from individual manufacturers. Apple, by contrast, controls the hardware, the operating system, and most of the conventions guiding the apps in its ecosystem. If the company manages to enforce consistent behavior between the closed and open displays, the Duo could make gestures and workflows that Android foldables have offered for years feel far more intuitive.
This does not mean competitors have stood still. The Android market took on the riskiest work: it brought foldable products to market in numerous configurations, improved hinge durability, reduced panel imperfections, and gradually made multitasking more reliable. Apple can now start from a more mature category, with costs and technical trade-offs better understood by the public. It is an advantage of timing, not necessarily of invention.
For Apple users, the decisive factor will be whether the Duo offers consistent advantages over a conventional iPhone, not just occasions where a larger screen comes in handy. Reading, browsing, email, messaging, photos, and working with multiple apps will need to gain continuity and speed. If unfolding the device requires adjusting the interface, manually resizing windows, or putting up with unoptimized applications, the value of the larger surface area will quickly diminish.
Apple’s debut raises expectations, but does not eliminate trade-offs
Apple’s presence will certainly lend greater commercial visibility to a product category that has so far remained largely tied to those willing to pay a premium for a flexible screen. But attention does not automatically resolve the issues inherent to the form factor: thickness, weight, the durability of moving parts, internal display management, and price will continue to influence purchasing decisions more than mere novelty.
Furthermore, the Duo will be judged by a stricter standard precisely because Apple is arriving late. Those who already own an Android foldable will have no reason to view an advanced hinge, a less noticeable crease, or improved protection against external elements as particularly original. To win over that audience, and above all to persuade traditional iPhone users, Cupertino will have to prove that software is not merely a garnish for the spec sheet, but the very reason why the form factor works better.
Early impressions suggest that Apple has paid close attention to the device's most visible elements, from the display finish to the perceived quality of the hinge. The real test, however, will begin with prolonged use and everyday apps. The Duo could become the foldable that leads a broader segment of iPhone users to seriously consider this category, not because it invented foldable hardware, but because it could present it with a level of software consistency that has so far been difficult to achieve on such a broad scale.
