Just hours after the unveiling of iPhone Duo, its unfolding animation has already appeared on a Galaxy Z Fold 8. Not via a Samsung update, nor thanks to a hidden One UI feature: it is experimental work shared on Reddit by a user who attempted to reproduce on the Korean foldable the visual effect seen in the first demonstrations of Apple's new device.

The result caught attention because it goes beyond simply changing wallpapers or overlaying a generic animation. As the Fold 8 unfolds, the screen appears to hold its position while the two halves of the phone arrange themselves around the content. Icons and UI elements transition progressively from the cover display to the inner screen, featuring a blurred, blue-tinted effect that closely echoes the sequence shown by Apple.

It is a seemingly minor detail compared to displays, hinges, and batteries, but on foldables, transitions between different physical configurations form a substantial part of the everyday experience. Software must accompany a mechanical motion without giving the impression of disrupting what the user was doing. It is on this front, rather than merely offering a book-style form factor, that Apple's arrival could intensify competition with Samsung and other Android manufacturers.

A recreation, not a One UI feature

The video shared by the creator should not be mistaken for a new feature rolling out to Galaxy Z Fold 8 devices. The recreation relies on an animation composed of screen captures treated with a blur effect and mapped to the hinge angle values. In practice, the sequence's progress tracks the device's opening angle: if the phone unfolds slowly, the effect advances slowly as well; if opened more quickly, the animation speeds up accordingly.

This workaround produces a convincing demo by leveraging a feature inherent to foldables: hinge angle detection. However, it also highlights the technical limitations of the project. Because it is not integrated into SystemUI—the Android system interface responsible for managing the home screen, notifications, and transitions, among other things—it cannot genuinely react to the state of active apps and running content.

The simulation therefore works on a representation of the screen, not on the system's individual live windows. It is not the same as a native transition capable of maintaining continuity with any open app, real-time updated widgets, and the many scenarios that arise during everyday use. It is an important distinction: the video demonstrates that the visual concept can be recreated, not that Galaxy Z Fold 8 has adopted the software behavior of iPhone Duo.

Precisely for this reason, there is currently no installable package or universal procedure for Fold users. The customization options offered by the Samsung ecosystem, including those tied to Good Lock, do not amount to full access to the internal mechanics of SystemUI. A supported, reliable modification would require direct intervention by Samsung within the One UI interface.

The physical gesture becomes part of the interface

Apple designed the opening of iPhone Duo as a visible part of the experience, rather than treating it as a simple switch between two displays. In the sequence seen so far, the interface remains legible and anchored to the scene as the device changes geometry; only at the end do icons and content settle into place on the internal panel. The visual language is consistent with Liquid Glass, the aesthetic approach centered on transparency, depth, and fluid transformations of interface elements.

The value of this design choice is not merely decorative. A foldable phone introduces a hardware discontinuity that traditional smartphones do not have: the outer and inner displays have different aspect ratios, dimensions, and often different usage patterns. A well-crafted animation can make that jump less abrupt and help users feel that their task is continuing, rather than restarting on another screen.

Samsung has been familiar with this challenge for years. The Galaxy Z Fold lineup has developed features to transition apps between the cover display and the main screen, alongside multitasking tools and layouts tailored for the internal panel. However, the demo that surfaced on Reddit points to another takeaway: part of the audience may also judge a foldable's maturity by these very brief transitions—the kind seen dozens of times a day that rarely appear on spec sheets.

The effect is all the more significant because iPhone Duo enters a segment that Samsung helped define. Apple is not arriving to propose an abstract idea of a flexible device, but a book-style model aimed at an audience already accustomed to comparing app continuity, hinge quality, ergonomics, and productivity. In this context, an animation can quickly turn into a point of public comparison and a demand directed at competitors as well.

For Samsung, imitation is also a signal

The speed with which the replica appeared says something about the community surrounding Android and Samsung foldables. The openness of the operating system, the customization tools, and the interest in mods, launchers, and automations encourage experiments of this kind. A user was able to take a solution seen during a rival product's presentation and test a version compatible with the Fold 8 hinge behavior within a single day.

Yet that same speed highlights the boundary between customization and experience design. Community-made modifications are great for validating an intuition, but rarely for polishing every use case. An integrated transition must consume few resources, introduce no lag, adapt to orientation and multiple windows, respect accessibility and reduce-motion settings, and function seamlessly with third-party applications.

If Samsung decided to take the hint, it wouldn't necessarily need to copy Apple's look. It could develop a transition with its own identity, more closely tied to the capabilities of One UI and the Fold's multitasking. The interesting aspect is that the concept has already been made tangible: it is no longer just an animation from the iPhone Duo keynote, but visual proof of what a more ambitious transition could look like on a Galaxy.

At the moment, however, there is no indication of any Samsung plan to introduce this specific solution into One UI or Good Lock. The enthusiasm generated by the video does not constitute a roadmap. The only concrete fact is the existence of the user demo, with its technical constraints, and the attention it garnered immediately following the Apple announcement.

Nevertheless, the story remains significant because it shifts the debate around foldables from the usual list of components to an aspect that is harder to quantify: the care with which hardware and software meet the moment the device is opened. With iPhone Duo, Apple chose to turn that transition into a hallmark of the product. With the Galaxy Z Fold 8, a user showed that the idea can be evoked elsewhere as well. The next move, if there is one, will be to see whether Samsung considers that kind of continuity important enough to turn it into a native feature.
