With the announcement of iPhone Duo, Apple formally enters the book-style foldable smartphone segment, going head-to-head with an immediate benchmark: the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8. The two devices share the same core concept—a phone-sized outer display and a larger inner screen for work, reading, video, and multitasking—and arrive at nearly overlapping US price points. The similarities, however, largely end there.
Apple has set the commercial launch of iPhone Duo for October 23, with a starting price of $1,999 in the United States. Galaxy Z Fold8 starts at $1,899.99. The hundred-dollar difference does not alter their market positioning: both are ultra-premium devices where design, mechanical durability, and software experience will matter at least as much as the spec sheet.
On paper, iPhone Duo opts for a configuration geared more toward ruggedness and battery endurance away from the outlet. Samsung, by contrast, retains a clear advantage in ergonomics: its Fold8 is thinner both folded and unfolded and, above all, significantly lighter. It is a distinction that can be felt daily, well beyond the numbers on a spec comparison.
Same inner screen size, different proportions in daily use
The internal panel on both models measures 7.6 inches. On iPhone Duo, it is an OLED screen at 2,670 × 1,878 pixels, with a pixel density of 430 ppi and ProMotion up to 120 Hz; Galaxy Z Fold8 uses a Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel at 2,448 × 1,848 pixels with an adaptive refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz. Both also claim 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.
The identical diagonal does not tell the whole story. Unfolded, iPhone Duo measures 164.6 × 117.8 × 5.2 millimeters, while Galaxy Z Fold8 comes in at 161.4 × 123.9 × 4.5 millimeters. Apple's model is therefore taller and narrower; Samsung's is wider and thinner. These geometries can affect how documents, side-by-side apps, and video content are viewed, even with an equivalent perceived surface area.
On the outside, Apple adopts a 5.4-inch OLED with 2,034 × 1,398 pixels and 460 ppi. Samsung offers a 5.5-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X with a resolution of 1,972 × 1,248 pixels. Here too, both reach 120 Hz. A tenth-of-an-inch difference alone is not enough to define the experience, but the closed Fold8 is wider, at 81.9 millimeters compared to 84.1 millimeters for iPhone Duo; Apple, on the other hand, is shorter, at 117.8 millimeters versus 123.9. The result is that neither can be evaluated solely as a compact tablet: each must also work well when closed, when used for messaging, maps, payments, and quick snapshots.
The Apple compromise: more bulk and 53 extra grams
The most immediate difference between the two foldables is their weight. iPhone Duo weighs 254 grams, Galaxy Z Fold8 201 grams: a 53-gram gap. In a traditional phone, this would already be a significant difference; in a device that may be held for long periods, or carried in a jacket or trouser pocket, it becomes one of the first features to check in person.
Thickness points in the same direction. When closed, iPhone Duo reaches 11.3 millimeters, compared to 9.7 millimeters for Galaxy Z Fold8; unfolded, the figures are 5.2 and 4.5 millimeters, respectively. Samsung therefore delivers a thinner device in both conditions. Apple seems to have accepted greater bulk for other priorities, including environmental protection and claimed battery life. Hands-on testing will be needed to see whether weight distribution and balance mitigate or amplify the numerical gap.
Apple's advantage in durability, on the other hand, is already clear on paper. iPhone Duo carries an IP68 rating, while Galaxy Z Fold8 is IP48. In practical terms, the former indicates greater protection against both dust ingress and water compared to the latter. For foldables, this is anything but a marginal detail: hinges, moving parts, and flexible screens remain the components that demand the most care compared to a standard slab smartphone.
Cameras and battery: two spec sheets with different priorities
Apple brings to iPhone Duo a rear dual-camera setup consisting of a 48-megapixel main camera and a 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera, featuring what it describes as optical-quality 2x zoom. Galaxy Z Fold8 responds with a 50-megapixel main camera and a 50-megapixel ultra-wide, also offering optical-quality 2x zoom. Megapixels alone do not reveal actual performance: image processing, sensors, optics, and low-light behavior are decisive factors that the available specifications do not clarify.
The front highlights a different approach. iPhone Duo integrates an under-display FaceTime camera on the internal screen and a 12-megapixel external camera with Center Stage. Samsung lists two 10-megapixel cameras, one under the inner panel and one on the outside. Under-display integration avoids a visible cutout in the workspace, but real-world quality in video calls and still shots will depend on testing: this is one area where a camera comparison will be more useful than a spec sheet.
Apple has not yet disclosed the battery capacity of iPhone Duo, simply referring to a dual-battery system and claiming up to 31 hours of video playback using the internal screen and up to 44 hours with the external one. Galaxy Z Fold8 features a 4,800 mAh dual battery and claims up to 26 hours of video playback. Measurement criteria and usage conditions are essential when evaluating these claims: video playback does not equal a full day of browsing, camera use, cellular connectivity, and multitasking apps. However, on paper Apple sets a more ambitious battery life target, especially when the phone is used closed.
Performance, memory, and accessories: what is already defined and what is missing
iPhone Duo uses A20 Pro; Galaxy Z Fold8 is powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy. These platforms belong to different ecosystems, with operating systems, power management, and software tools that cannot be compared by the chip name alone. Apple has not disclosed the RAM of iPhone Duo. Samsung offers 12 GB on the 256 and 512 GB variants and 16 GB on the 1 TB configuration.
As for storage, Apple starts at 256 GB and reaches up to 2 TB, with 512 GB and 1 TB options in between. Samsung tops out at 1 TB, offering 256 and 512 GB capacities. For those who shoot a lot of video, store professional files, or download media for offline use, the 2 TB option can be a tangible selling point, not just a spec-sheet entry.
iPhone Duo supports Apple Pencil (USB-C). In the specs evaluated for Galaxy Z Fold8, no stylus is listed. Apple compatibility could make the form factor more compelling for note-taking, sketching, and markup, but it remains to be seen how well-integrated the solution is in everyday use: an accessory carried separately does not offer the same convenience as a device with a dedicated slot.
The real battle will be in the foldable experience
The preliminary matchup gives Samsung the edge in weight and thinness, while awarding Apple key points for its IP68 rating, storage configurations, and battery life estimates. The displays share very similar specs, whereas for cameras and performance, raw numbers are not enough to draw definitive conclusions.
What remains is the most delicate question for any foldable: transitioning from outer to inner display, hinge quality, the visibility and feel of the center crease, and long-term durability after months of opening and closing. Apple has highlighted software optimizations tailored to this form factor, including the transition animation between screens. These are the details that can make the daily experience feel either seamless or disjointed.
Until iPhone Duo hits the market, Galaxy Z Fold8 retains the advantage of a more compact and lighter design. Apple, however, is stepping in with a product that does not attempt to replicate that exact formula: it accepts larger dimensions and aims to build an alternative centered on durability, battery life, and integration into the iPhone ecosystem. In-depth reviews will have to determine whether this tradeoff is convincing at the asking price.
