A British department store is producing a YouTube talk show. Not just to entertain or sell gifts, but to increase the chances of appearing in answers generated by artificial intelligence systems.
John Lewis will launch Gift List, a vodcast hosted by Angela Scanlon with guests including Louis Theroux. Management explicitly linked the investment to the growth of searches influenced by tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini.
From SEO to cultural presence
Traditional search engine optimisation rewarded pages built around queries and keywords. Generative systems, however, look for sources, conversations, and signals distributed across multiple platforms. This makes producing content that also exists outside the corporate website worthwhile.
An interview with a well-known figure can generate transcripts, quotes, articles, clips, and discussions. Every fragment increases the brand’s digital surface area.
The brand becomes a publisher because AI needs sources
Content marketing is not new. What is new is the infrastructural rationale: being present in the information corpus from which search engines and assistants draw answers. The company is not merely producing a campaign; it is producing material that can be interpreted by machines.
This could also change the required quality. Filling the web with near-identical pages is less useful when systems synthesise information. Creating original content that others quote and discuss becomes more valuable.
