OpenAI has appointed Paul Christiano to the board of its Foundation. Christiano will also serve as a non-voting observer on the PBC board and as a member of the Safety and Security Committee.
The appointment carries significant weight given the new board member's profile. Christiano worked at NIST's Center for AI Standards and Innovation and previously founded the Alignment Research Center, having long focused on the challenge of keeping increasingly capable systems under human control.
Safety enters governance
Bringing a figure with strong risk-oriented views onto the board means shifting at least part of the discussion from research to the governing structure. OpenAI continues to race ahead on the commercial front, but it must simultaneously prove that safety decisions are not merely internal procedures within technical teams.
It remains to be seen, of course, how much actual weight this structure will carry when safety and product velocity come into conflict. It is precisely in those moments that governance stops being an org chart and becomes a true test.
