Ultrahuman has raised $70 million in a new round with participation from Qualcomm Ventures, Labcorp, Alpha Wave, Blume Ventures, Nexus Venture Partners, and Alteria Capital. Founder Mohit Kumar explained to TechCrunch that the funding includes $65 million in primary equity and $5 million in debt; a source cited by the publication puts the Bengaluru-based company's valuation at around $365 million, roughly three times its $120 million valuation in 2023.
The most interesting part, however, is not the valuation given to the startup. Ultrahuman wants to shift from the health wearables category to what it defines as a human-computer interface built around the body. Its smart ring is slated to progressively become a tiny computer capable of running software, processing signals, and, over time, supporting AI interactions and even gaming applications.
The smart ring looks for a purpose beyond sleep
The first generation of smart rings found its market primarily in passive tracking: sleep, heart rate, recovery, temperature, and activity. It is an interesting niche because a ring is less intrusive than a smartwatch overnight and can collect data without a screen.
The limitation is that many products end up offering similar charts. Ultrahuman wants to differentiate itself by turning hardware into a platform where software features can be added. It is a strategy comparable, on a smaller scale, to the transition from the feature phone to the smartphone.
Qualcomm brings expertise beyond capital
The presence of Qualcomm Ventures carries strategic value because Qualcomm builds chips and platforms for low-power devices. Bringing more compute to the ring requires precisely this kind of optimization: every operation consumes energy, and a tiny battery cannot be treated like a smartphone's.
The real leap will be managing to run on-device inference without compromising battery life and thermals. Processing on the device can reduce latency and the amount of data sent to the cloud, but it requires specialized hardware and highly efficient models.
Health remains the starting point
Ultrahuman is not abandoning tracking. The company cites sleep, cardiovascular health, metabolism, hormonal rhythms, biomarkers, recovery, and environment as signals to be combined. The ambition is to shift from measurement to decision-making: not merely stating what happened to the body, but suggesting which action makes the most sense at that moment.
This is where AI comes in. A system that observes longitudinal data can identify personal patterns that are difficult to discern from a single metric. But the line between wellness and medicine demands caution: a wearable-generated recommendation is not equivalent to a clinical diagnosis.
The wearable computer is becoming increasingly invisible
Smartphones and smartwatches constantly demand attention through screens and notifications. The ring follows the opposite logic: it collects information without occupying the field of view. If it can also process it locally, it can become a form of ambient computing.
This model is particularly compelling for personal AI. A useful assistant could understand physiological context without forcing the user to open an app and describe how they feel. The risk, of course, is that deeply intimate information becomes part of commercial platforms.
Privacy and security become more critical the smarter the product gets
Continuous biometric data can reveal habits, health status, sleep patterns, and physical changes. If the ring runs third-party software, the risk surface expands even further. A platform requires permissions, application isolation, and clear policies on what can leave the device.
It is a challenge similar to the one faced by smartphones, but with potentially far more sensitive data. Ultrahuman will need to prove that opening up to new features does not turn the ring into yet another device that collects too much.
The platform needs to win over developers
An operating system without applications remains an experiment. Ultrahuman has introduced modular features and talks about additional software, but growth will depend on the ability to build tools people actually want to use. The developer count will be far lower than that of iOS or Android, at least initially.
The startup can, however, start from a high-engagement niche: users willing to pay for fitness and health. If a few applications demonstrate tangible value, the ring could evolve into a broader category.
The risk is overpromising
The "human computing platform" narrative is ambitious and aims to shift perception beyond wearables. But hardware this small faces harsh physical constraints. It will not replace a smartphone anytime soon, and many features will continue to rely on the phone or the cloud.
Success, however, does not require replacing everything. It just needs to find a class of tasks the ring performs better simply because it is always on, discreet, and close to the body.
The bet is that the next computer won't have a screen
Meta is betting on glasses, Apple on the watch and headphones, and several startups on pendants and pins. Ultrahuman chooses the finger. Everyone is chasing the same insight: AI can make a computer useful even without a large visual interface, because interaction can be mediated by voice, context, and automation.
The $70 million round provides the resources to test how viable this vision really is. If the smart ring remains merely an excellent sensor, Ultrahuman will still have a market. If it manages to become a computing platform, the meaning of the category will shift: the most personal computer could well be the one we forget we are wearing.
