Greece could have its first astronaut in 2027. The European Space Agency has signed an agreement with Vast to include Adrianos Golemis, a flight surgeon working with ESA, on the first private mission to the International Space Station awarded by NASA to the American company. Participation remains subject to approval by the Multilateral Crew Operations Panel, the body bringing together ISS partners, but the crew structure is already established: Thomas Pesquet as commander, Aleš Svoboda as pilot, and Golemis as mission specialist.

This is major news for Greece, but also a concrete example of how human spaceflight access is evolving. For decades, flying to the Station almost always meant being selected by one of the major national or international agencies and joining government programs with protracted timelines. Private missions are establishing a second gateway, enabling smaller governments to purchase or negotiate seats on certified commercial flights.

NASA uses the private sector for the post-ISS transition

The Vast mission is part of the program through which NASA is opening the Station to private flights. The objective is not merely commercial: the agency aims to prepare the transition toward low Earth orbit stations managed by private operators once the ISS is retired. Vast is one of the players aspiring to build commercial orbital infrastructure, and each crewed mission also helps build operational experience.

For NASA, this represents a form of market creation. Rather than owning the entire infrastructure indefinitely, the agency is seeking to become one of several customers on commercial platforms. It follows the same logic that transformed cargo and later human transport with SpaceX: public contracts used to foster capabilities that can subsequently be sold to other clients as well.

Golemis brings medical expertise to space

Adrianos Golemis is not a tourist selected merely for national representation. He is a flight surgeon experienced in mission support and, if approved, will join the crew as a mission specialist. This distinction is critical because it illustrates the evolution of private missions: no longer simple joyrides for wealthy clients, but flights on which countries, corporations, and institutions can pursue defined scientific or professional goals.

Greece will be able to use the mission as leverage to develop educational, scientific, and industrial activities. Even a single flight can generate research programs, university partnerships, and visibility for domestic companies interested in the space sector.

SpaceX remains the transportation infrastructure

The plan calls for a launch with a Falcon 9 and a Dragon capsule. Here, too, a defining feature of the new space economy emerges: different companies can specialize in different parts of the chain. Vast organizes and develops the mission and aims for its own orbital infrastructure; SpaceX provides transportation; ESA manages the relationship on behalf of Greece and contributes to crew preparation.

This modular model reduces the need for every new operator to build everything from scratch. At the same time, it creates heavy dependencies on a handful of suppliers, particularly in American human spaceflight, where Dragon maintains a dominant position.

Europe tests more flexible access

ESA has historically selected astronauts through highly competitive continent-wide campaigns. The new ecosystem enables additional pathways: project astronauts, national agreements, commercial missions, and collaborations with private operators. Aleš Svoboda, designated as pilot, already embodies this flexibility, as does the potential participation of Golemis.

For countries that have not traditionally had a national astronaut, the cost and complexity of an independent program would be prohibitive. A shared mission instead makes it possible to enter the sector with a more focused investment.

The Space Station has also become a marketplace

The ISS remains an international scientific platform, but in recent years it has also become a venue where companies sell services, missions, and access. This creates opportunities as well as questions. On one hand, it increases the number of entities capable of conducting microgravity research; on the other, commercial priorities must not reduce the space available for public programs or create disparities in access based solely on spending power.

NASA and its partners are trying to manage this transition while maintaining shared safety and approval procedures. The fact that Golemis must go through the MCOP shows that the private nature of the flight does not eliminate multilateral oversight of crew composition.

2027 will be a symbolic year

If the mission proceeds as planned, Greece will join the ranks of nations that have sent a citizen into space just as the ISS approaches the final chapter of its history. It is a symbolic moment: a country enters the era of human spaceflight just as the architecture that defined the past decades is about to be replaced.

The mission's greatest value may therefore lie in what follows. If Greek universities, companies, and institutions leverage the flight to build lasting expertise, the experience will not remain an isolated national event. It will become a gateway into an orbital economy where access, research, and infrastructure will be increasingly shared between the public and private sectors.
