Apple enters the foldable smartphone market with iPhone Duo, a book-style model marking the most significant form factor shift for the iPhone since the line’s inception. The device will be available from October 23, following pre-orders opening on October 16, with a starting price set at $1,999. It is a threshold that immediately positions the product at the very top of Apple’s lineup and squarely in the territory of premium foldables from Samsung and Google.
The choice of the name Duo makes the project's intent clear: not a traditional iPhone with an added flexible screen, but a phone designed to alternate between two working surfaces. When folded, the device features a 5.4-inch outer display; unfolding it reveals a 7.6-inch inner panel. Apple claims both maintain the same aspect ratio, avoiding overly jarring scaling shifts when moving from compact to expanded use.
The format avoids the square shape adopted by several book-style foldables. iPhone Duo is wider and shorter, with proportions Apple likens to those of a passport. The practical result is an inner surface closer to a small tablet: better suited for reading, video content, gaming, and especially side-by-side applications. When folded, it remains usable with one hand—at least according to the company’s intentions—and the outer display reportedly offers 90% of the surface area of iPhone 18 Pro.
A design built around the hinge
The most delicate aspect of any foldable is the junction between display and mechanics. Apple concentrated a significant portion of iPhone Duo's innovations here. The titanium hinge, made up of over one hundred components, uses variable resistance to guide the opening action and keep the panel flat once unfolded. A system of magnets assists in closing the two halves.
Inside the flexible display lies a multi-layer structure featuring a titanium base, flexible glass, and a custom-developed polymer coating. Apple claims this build significantly reduces the central crease, including the risk of it becoming more visible with prolonged use. It is a major goal in an industry where recent generations have mitigated the issue without eliminating it entirely. The inner panel also receives a matte nano-texture finish designed to cut reflections and glare.
The company also claims an IP68 rating against water and dust. The chassis is crafted from mirror-polished Grade 5 titanium, while the hinge cover is produced using 3D printing and a micro-blasted finish. Ceramic fibers and antenna line reinforcements have been integrated into the body—details highlighting how structural durability remains central to a device meant to be opened and closed dozens of times a day.
Both Super Retina XDR screens feature ProMotion, Always On mode, and a claimed outdoor peak brightness of 3,000 nits. On the inner display, Apple conceals an under-panel FaceTime camera, visible only when active. This solution has been tested by other manufacturers and subsequently abandoned in some competing lines, but it keeps the usable screen area uninterrupted by punch-holes or notches.
iOS 27 changes scale, not identity
The value of a foldable also depends on how the operating system handles resizing. With iOS 27, Apple has revamped the interface for iPhone Duo without turning it into a separate environment. Apps can be organized more easily in split screen and managed as a single multitasking unit, while the transition between the outer and inner displays is designed to preserve proportions and content continuity.
This approach could be crucial in distinguishing the Duo from a large smartphone: the extra space must make it easier to juggle two tasks at once, review documents, or control creative tools without forcing developers to redesign every screen from scratch. It remains to be seen, once the device hits the market, how quickly and effectively third-party applications will actually embrace the new form factor.
Support for Apple Pencil with USB-C will also arrive before the end of the year, usable on both displays for notes, sketches, and markups. It is a decision that expands the device's productivity appeal without turning it into a direct iPad replacement. Authentication, on the other hand, skips Face ID: Touch ID is integrated into the side button and can be paired with Apple Watch unlock. The side rail also retains Camera Control, used to quickly launch the camera and power the new Siri Camera mode, which enables Siri to analyze what the user is framing and perform actions or provide context-aware answers.
Flagship performance and dual batteries
iPhone Duo adopts the A20 Pro, the same chip found in the new non-folding iPhones, alongside an Apple-designed vapor chamber thermal system. The internal setup uses dual batteries—one in each half—an almost mandatory requirement in a chassis split by a hinge. The company rates battery life at up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, 44 hours on the outer screen, and around 24 hours under mixed use across both panels.
As with all battery life figures shared at launch, the numbers will need to be evaluated in independent testing, especially considering that a 7.6-inch panel, high brightness, and multitasking represent very different conditions from simple video playback. Weight, actual folded thickness, and comfort during extended use will also be tangible aspects to verify: titanium and complex mechanics may increase durability, but they do not eliminate the physical compromises of a foldable.
Apple also integrates Apple Intelligence 2 and Siri AI, linking artificial intelligence features to the user's personal context. On the photography front, the Cupertino company speaks of an advanced system and highlights that the foldable structure enables new ways to use the cameras, though it has not yet outlined all the technical sensor specifications in its launch materials. Two finishes are available: star white and night sky.
The debut arrives at a time when the foldable market is no longer experimental, yet remains an expensive niche. Apple is not inaugurating the category: rather, it is attempting to establish its own interpretation, less akin to an elongated phone that opens into a square and more geared toward continuity between a smartphone and a compact tablet. At $1,999, iPhone Duo will not immediately broaden the iPhone audience. However, it could become the proving ground for whether Apple can make foldables a less specialized format, with software, accessories, and services built from the ground up around two displays.
