Apple introduced M6, its first 2-nanometer chip, alongside M5 Ultra. The launch covers Mac mini and Mac Studio, but the most compelling news is strategic: Apple continues to invest in running artificial intelligence models directly on-device.
M6 integrates a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU, Neural Accelerators, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. Meanwhile, M5 Ultra pushes the multi-die architecture even further, reaching up to 512 GB of unified memory—a capacity that allows loading models locally that just a few years ago required server infrastructure.
Local AI changes the relationship with the cloud
Most generative services still rely on remote data centers. While efficient for the largest models, this introduces latency, inference costs, and privacy concerns. A computer capable of running complex models locally can provide an alternative path, especially for developers, creatives, and enterprises working with sensitive data.
Apple controls the chip, operating system, and frameworks. This vertical integration allows optimizing Core ML, Metal, and developer tools directly on the hardware. It is an advantage that becomes increasingly crucial as AI shifts from being a standalone app to a distributed feature across the operating system.
The personal computer becomes infrastructure once again
For years, the cloud moved compute capacity off the device. AI could spark a partial shift in the opposite direction. Not everything will run locally, but a growing share of workloads can be handled on the Mac, turning to the cloud only when extra compute is needed.
This is where M6 matters more than raw performance: it demonstrates how the personal computer is once again becoming an essential node in AI infrastructure.
